AB OBJECTIVE: In order to reduce the risk of HIV transmission through blood
transfusion, we conducted a study during August 1992 to October 1993 to
measure the validity of implementing our donor self deferral form.
METHODS: The self-deferral form which was given to all blood donors
includes questions about sexual and IV-drug abuse behavior within 3
months before donating blood. The donors were asked to declare whether
their blood was safe or not. Blood was collected and examined for
HIV-antigen, anti-HIV, HBsAg and VDRL. One way analysis was used to
analyse the results. RESULTS: TABULAR DATA, SEE ABSTRACT VOLUME.
DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSIONS: The self-declared high risk donors
demonstrated statistically significant higher prevalence rate of
anti-HIV, HIV-antigen and HBsAg (P < 0.05). The HIV-antigen was found as
single marker in one male high risk donor only. In conclusion,
self-deferral form is valid in our experience and its implementation
should be encouraged for recruiting blood donors in Thailand.
