  11.  AB    OBJECTIVE: In order to reduce the risk of HIV transmission through blood
  12.        transfusion, we conducted a study during August 1992 to October 1993 to
  13.        measure the validity of implementing our donor self deferral form.
  14.        METHODS: The self-deferral form which was given to all blood donors
  15.        includes questions about sexual and IV-drug abuse behavior within 3
  16.        months before donating blood. The donors were asked to declare whether
  17.        their blood was safe or not. Blood was collected and examined for
  18.        HIV-antigen, anti-HIV, HBsAg and VDRL. One way analysis was used to
  19.        analyse the results. RESULTS: TABULAR DATA, SEE ABSTRACT VOLUME.
  20.        DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSIONS: The self-declared high risk donors
  21.        demonstrated statistically significant higher prevalence rate of
  22.        anti-HIV, HIV-antigen and HBsAg (P < 0.05). The HIV-antigen was found as
  23.        single marker in one male high risk donor only. In conclusion,
  24.        self-deferral form is valid in our experience and its implementation
  25.        should be encouraged for recruiting blood donors in Thailand.
